THE HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF TANGUB |
|
The
Tangub City High School was established by virtue of City
Resolution No.304 of the Sangguniang Panglungsod in June 1971
attached to a Provincial High School of Misamis Occidental. In
1973, it became a regular City High School with the passage of
City Resolution No. 133 creating a high school in the City of
Tangub. The main objective for its creation was to meet the
needs of poor but deserving students to obtain quality general
secondary education who had not enough financial means to study
in a private high school. During that time there was only one
high school in the city the St. Michael’s High School, a
sectarian school where only the children of affluent families
could afford to pay the high tuition fees.
When
classes started in 1971, there were only 78 students enrolled in
the first and second years. Miss Sacor, Miss Natividad and Miss
Poloyapoy were the pioneer teachers. Classes were then held in
the old shop building of the City Central School. In the next
school year the enrolment was 173 with the third year curriculum
and the two additional teachers were hired, Mrs. Berediana
Jumamil and Mr. Danilo Villejo To accommodate the new students,
some classes were held in the City Gymnasium and some elementary
teachers, Miss Ramona V. Diez, Miss Clarita Durias, and Miss
Conol volunteered as part time teachers. The administrator of
the school was the principal of Tangub City Central School, Mr.
Geofredo V. Ymalay. It was in school year 1972-1973 when Tangub
City High School became independent in administration and
supervision from the Tangub City Central School with Miss Elisa
V. Diez as head teacher. The following school year, 19731974,
the school turned out its first batch of 57 seniors who
graduated on March 27, 1974.
The
school transferred to its new campus, the Tangub City Sports
Complex located at Maloro, Tangub City during the school year
l973~l974 with 287 students. Its development was placed under
the leadership of the following administrators:
1. Mr.
Geofredo V. Ymalay 197l-1972
Assistant Principal
When
classes started in 1971 the total enrolment was only 78 students
and in school year 1981-1982 barely ten years from its operation
it has a total enrolment of 931 students and in 1991-1992 it has
more than I students. After a span of 23 years, the enrolment
has to be maintained to the level of 1,400 students due to jack
of teachers and classrooms. Teachers have been handling extra
subject loads. From a dilapidated shop room and gymnasium and
sheer sacrifice of noble teachers, Tangub City High School has
eventually attained prominence in the field of secondary
education. The school has built up reputation for academic
excellence, high standard of discipline, and a sense of
community leader-ship. The school has already produced a number
of scholars and leaders in the locality. Most of our graduates
have become successful in their field of interest. This has
attracted many of our youths to enroll in our school such that
the population has grown so much from the start of its creation
until at present. The parents and the community likewise
supported the school.
The
Tangub City High School in its program to extend the educational
services and make secondary education accessible to the youth of
rural areas assisted closely in the establishment of barrio high
schools. These are the following: Silangit Barangay High School,
Simasay Barangay High School (closed due to peace and order),
Sumirap Barangay High School, Bongabong High School, Santa Maria
Barangay High School, and the re-opening of Banglay Barangay
High School. Lorenzo Tan Barangay School was already a regular
Barangay High School when Tangub City High School was created.
These barangay high schools were under the direct supervision of
Tangub City High School as a mother high school pursuant to R.A.
6054 known as the Barrio High School Charier until the school
year 1989-1990 when the Free Secondary Education Act was
implemented and the barangay high schools were placed already
under the direct supervision and administration of the Division
Offices.
The
school survived and emerged under the heavy pressure of
financial difficulties for 5 years when it was still under the
local government. The city aid were not enough for its
operation. The Annual Budget was derived mainly from the tuition
fees paid by the students. Majority of these students come from
poor families and they cannot pay the low tuition fees charged
by the school. Because of this condition, many teachers resigned
or transferred to other agencies so that only few of the pioneer
teachers remained. These are the following: Mr. Wilfredo M.
Rico, the present Administrator, Mr. Romulo Surdilia, Department
Head, Mr. Edito Bugsocan , teacher III, and Mrs. Marecla F.
Buenbrazo.
A
milestone in the history of this institution was in June 1977,
when it was nationalized by virtue of a special budget under PD
1050 otherwise known as the General Appropriation Act of 1977
with a total appropriation of P92, 000.00. There was a great
sigh of relief from the 14 teachers and one principal of the
school. The flame of the school was changed to Tangub City
National High School.
The
nationalization of the school
has
provided
new vision and has given new strength for its educational
mission:
To
enable each Filipino citizen to develop his full potentials for
self-actualization and productivity. To inculcate, social, moral
and cultural values from which shall spring strong sense of
national pride, identity, discipline and commitment to have an
economic efficiency, and respect of human rights to have a
united, peaceful and progressive Tangub City in line with the
DECS thrusts and programs.
Tangub
city National High School is a government institution of
learning, hence; it attempts to be responsive to the educational
needs of the youth of Tangub City and the surrounding barrios
free of charge through its four-year secondary education course.
In line with this mission, the school is committed to provide
each student with learning experiences so that the end of the
four-year course he may:
1.
Grows in justice and love towards becoming committed
person.
2.
Be prepared for whatever course they may pursue after
high school by means of a well-rounded academic and vocational
preparation for adult life through planned curricula and
co-curricula programs.
3. Manifest attitude of a well-integrated mature personality
deeply imbued with human values.
4. Demonstrate
citizenship
and genuine
pride to their cultural heritage as Filipinos who are conscious
of the world Situations in general and in the country in
particular.
The
accelerated development of the school plant and facilities can
be attributed to the efforts of local and national officials. On
February 23, 1983 the City Government with the stewardship of
the late Mayor Alfonso D. Tan donated a 7.8-hectare of school
site located at Mantic, Tangub City. In the same year a
two-story reinforced concrete academic building was constructed
with an appropriation of P1, 400,000.00. In the following year
additional funds for its completion were given by the DBM such
that today the building would already cost more than P5,
000,000.00 consisting of 20 standard size classrooms, offices,
library and storeroom for supplies and materials. In 1985, the
PTA constructed a temporary school building where 8 classes
could be accommodated. Temporary H.E. canteens were likewise
constructed out of donations from the city government, local
officials and the PTA. In 1993 a two-rooms Multi-Purpose
building was constructed by the DPWH, Tangub City. Looking
forward one can safely say that Tangub City National High School
has achieved something for the education of the youths and for t
development of secondary education in this part of the country. |
