Barangay Profile

Part I – Profile / Description of the Barangay

A. Historical Background

The Subanos were the first traceable people to inhabit Barangay Malubog. They may have begun settling the places as early as the first part of the 19th century.

Older people of Malubog say that their parents settled herein 1905. The words: Malubog for Malubog River, Lumbia for Lubia Spring and bomba for the upper part of the Malubog River were there is a spring, were in used already. Since the words mentioned above there were not Subanos words but rather Cebuano words, it would be safe to conjecture that the Christian settlers could have come here as early as 1850.

Among the Christians settlers before 1905 were: Mateo Mila, Esteban Fuentes, Ponciano Omagbon, Agosto Solis, Vicente Fernandez, Decoy Azcuna, Jose Siete, Martin Matalines, Domingo Revilla, Pacundo Huertas and teofilo Ferrera who own large protion of lang in Malubog, who now resided in what is now as Polao.

Most of the Subanon people went to the innermost of the Mt. Malindang after they had bartered their lands with the Christians Settlers in exchange of bonglay (bolo) and honsoy (tobacco pipe). Only few descendants of Subanon people remain in Malubog to this day.

The most part of the land of Malubog is used as residential lots.

C. Socio-Economic Profile

1. Socio-Economic Demography

Vital to life of the residents are the two springs namely: Lumbia Spring and Bomba Spring which are excellent source of potable drinking water for the whole barangay as well as its neighboring barangays. There, people take a bath and wash clothes. Tangub City Water District also provides commercial water for the people. The Barangay needs for electric power for the houses illumination, for appliance and for the various electrical contrivances used in industrial production and services were provided by the MOELCI II.

The Tangub City Central School and Tangub City National High School both provides elementary and secondary education for the youth of Malubog so with the Saint Michael’s High School, which is located on the northeast border of Malubog. The barangay has one private kindergarten school. In its barangay hall are held barangay assembly meetings, discos, Christmas programs, new years program and possibly in the near future a non-formal education classes and seminar workshops. The Slaughterhouse provides venue for the preparing various meat for sale at Tangub City Agora market.

As far as the services and facilities are concerned, the barangay has poor drainage system, poor cleanliness condition, and lack of proper sports facilities, poor street illumination system and poor barangay roads. Tricycle drivers shun entering the barangay especially during nighttime for fear of getting harassed by spoiled teenagers.

Economically speaking, many residents of Malubog were employed at the city government. In fact, it is here where the city vice mayor resides and some of the high officials of the different departments of the city halls office. Few of them are self-employed and lots of them out of school youth do not have gainful employment.
