Part 1 – Profile / Description of
the Barangay
A. Historical Background
Barangay Sumirap was derived from the
name of a Subanen Chieftain of the area Tacon Sumirap. One day,
the chieftain visited his illing relative in the highland, which
only is to pass barangay Bagumbang. On his way home, the rain
poured down heavily and upon reaching tha bank of Bagumbong River
the water was rising. Despite of this, he decided to cross but was
swept away by the turbulent flow of the river. His dead body was
found the following day near the riverbank. He was buried in the
place by his followers where he ruled and commemorated the place
to be called “Sumirap”.
The early inhabitants in Sumirap were
usually Subanons at that time Bagumbang River was passing through
the foot of the hilly portion of Sumirap going to the sea where
the lowlands were still swampy and forested. Barangay Sumirap
served as the trading center for the locals because the fishermen
usually dock at the riverbank at Sumirap as evidence now you can
still see huge pile of different seashells at the house of
Sangguniang Barangay Isodoro Montemayor, Sr.
With the influx of different tribes
Cebuano, Boholano and etc. the Subanons decided to separate
themselves and moved to the hinterlands.
In 1932, Sumirap became a barangay of
the municipality of Tangub by virtue of Republic Act 2370.
