 Part I – Profile / Description of the Barangay

A. Historical Background

During the administration of the former late President Ferdinand E. Marcos, he promulgated or enacted some decrees. One of decree that was implemented, a Pres. Decree, No. 557 (September 21,1974) declaring that all barrios in the Philippines that may be created or declared as “Barangay”. Furthermore, poblacion was also subdivided and those municipalities having to earn an adequate amount of income are classified as chartered cities sorting them into 1st, 2nd and 3rd class categories under RA 3590 as amended in the “Revised Barrio Charter”.


Barangay 4 Sceneries

            On that period, Tangub was still a municipality under the administration of the late Mayor Alfonso D. Tan. With some major developments, Tangub was classified into a Chartered City. Therefore, under the leadership of Mayor Alfonso D. Tan, the Poblacion area was divided into 7 barangays, which brought about to the creation of this part of the Poblacion into Barangay IV.
 

B. Physiographic Profile

1. Location, Area and Access

            Barangay IV has an area of 28.2133 hectares of land. The land area of Barangay IV is classified as residential, commercial and agricultural. Kinds of soil that can be identified around the barangay are Lome, clay, muddy and the so-called ‘Petsa’. The estimated distance from Barangay IV to the City Hall is 0.5 kilometers taking you around 15 minutes to walk going to Agora. Major landmarks inside the boundaries of Barangay IV include 2 gasoline stations, Petron and Caltex, PLDT Telephone Company, the Barangay Office, Day Care Training Center, 2 Roman Catholic churches, a Church of Later Day Saints, Iglesia ni Cristo, a few sari-sari stores and a furniture shop.

2. Climate and Rainfall

            During the months of January to May, the dry or hot season takes place while in the months of June to December the rainy season occurs.

3. Physical Topography

            The terrain is generally plain. The soil types in the barangay are very suitable for corn, coconut, rootcrops, fruit trees and others. Water supply is just enough to provide the households in the barangay.

Based on the above data, male and female has the same number of population. Total number of population in Barangay IV as of 2001 is 630.

            The above table shows different numbers of age distribution as of 2001 per census of the barangay. From ages 0-5 we can see that the number of male is equal to the number of female; if we try to look at the age bracket 36-40 it is tied once again. Based on the records under age distribution gathered, we can notice that the female and male population is tied up in terms of total population.

            As shown in the above diagram the number of single female is greater than that of single male, the married male has a total number114 while its counterpart, the married women is lesser than that of the married men. The widow category has a total number of 24, 5 of it are male and 19 for female.

4. Dialect spoken at home

            One hundred percent of the people in the barangay use the Cebuano language. Although some members, the professional in particular use the English language often for businnes purposes. Other members also have the capacity to speak Tagalog and English especially in times of special occasion or in entertaining visitors.

Part II – Situational Analysis

Survival Needs

A. Food and Nutrition

            Based on the survey done as of 2002, 85% of the barangay delivered at least 2.5 kilos of newly born babies. Unfortunately based on the gathered records there are about 15% of malnourished children. Pregnant and lactating mothers were provided iron and iodine supplements which best helped for their condition. Ninety percent (90%) of infants were fed until 4 to 6 months.

B. Health

            Survey done by Barangay Health Workers shows 70% of pregnant women give birth in the hospitals, some choose to deliver at home assisted by trained personnel due to financial difficulty. Infants aging 0-1 years had been given complete immunization including pregnant women who were given 2 doses of anti-tetanus toxoid for their protection. There are 90% of the couples in the barangay who are practicing family planning; natural way and some even are using contraceptives.

C. Water and Sanitation

            Survey shows that 100% of the population use safe drinking water where each household have their own faucet, 90% of the households use water sealed bowls.

D. Clothing

            As per census of 2002, people of the barangay, age’s o and above have least 3 pairs of external and internalclothes at home. Family belonged in the upper class definitely own several clothes.

 

Security Needs

E. Shelter

Ninety-five percent (95%) of the houses in the barangay have lasted to as durable for at least 5 years. Generally houses were made up of hollow blocks and cement, which may be classified as semi-concrete houses some of the residents in the barangay were just contented in renting a house instead of owning one.

F. Peace and Order and Public Safety

z           Talking about the peace and order situation in the barangay, there were some reported theft and break in primarily because of some strees lights that were broken due to irresponsible persons, heavily drunk, quarrels among neighborhood and some family troubles. No major crimes were ever reported yet.

G. Income and Employment

            Ninety-five percent (95%) of the population in the barangay has their own sources of income, most of them were employed in the government agencies, others were connected in private agencies and some are self-employed.

Enabling Needs

 

H. Basic Education and Literacy

            Children ages 3-5, composed of 50 were attending Day Care classes, 6-12 years composed of 85 children were in their elementary years while children aging 13-16 were in High School composed of 60 children, 18 years and above are able to read and write.

 

I. People’s Participation

            About the members’ participation, in times of election, only 85% of the entire populations were able to participate in the election due to reasons that other resident wasn’t able to register in the COMELEC and others haven’t transferred their registration in the barangay and some are even registered in other places. Members in the barangay are not often active in participating in barangay activities like assembly, community services and meetings.

J.Family Care / Phsychosocial

            Children below 7 years old of the family were not abandoned by parents; no incident of domestic violence. No drug users and pushers were ever caught in our barangay that were just the occasional drunk members during special occasions.
